Elements Of Theatre
Theatre arts are characterized as a group activity. A single individual cannot form a theatre. One play requires people from different areas of creativity. These form the basic elements of Theatre. A harmonious union of all the theatre equipments and actors can only make the play popular and successful!
The theatrical supplies are broadly classified as stage design, theatrical costumes, theatrical makeup, theatre sound, theatrical lighting and other designers required for a specific kind of play. These theatre equipments define the aesthetics of the production team for a play. Looking at the theatrical supplies of theatre, people can identify in which period the play is pointing to. Aesthetics help to portray the play with a greater impact on its audiences. Humans have a tendency to capture pictures more correctly as compared to sound. An extravagant colorful image grabs more attention than a dull visual sight. With the help of such visuals it is made easy for the actors to perform real life visuals that could convince the audiences. Without a balance of these theatre equipments a play would seem abrupt and plain.
Every character within a play would have a particular dressing that will make the audiences understand the environment to which the character belongs. If he is a king he would have an extravagant costume while a pauper would hardly have any costume. Same applies to makeup. Infact getting the look of a beggar is much more difficult than getting the king dressed. The most difficult performances are the ones that have fewer minutiae with dressing and makeup. The Costume designers have to bear in mind the character's occupation, personality and the place where he is living, before designing a costume for him. If the actor has to perform dance sequence, his dress has to be designed taking the comfort while dancing into consideration. Possibilities are that actors have less time to change from one costume to another between consecutive scenes. All these factors have to be considered before the costume is designed for an actor.
Theatrical lightings gathered momentum in mid 18th century when electricity became easily available. Lights can create immense change in the scene within a few minutes. Theatrical lightnings can change day into night and happiness into sorrow just by increasing or decreasing its intensities. Another use of theatrical lightnings is to highlight a particular spot onstage. Lights can make it possible to make hundreds of spectators follow a sequence of visuals you illuminate on stage. Similarly if lights are systematically arranged, they could be helpful to hide particular areas onstage too. Theatrical lightings can have different forms/shapes too.
Sound too is one of the vital theatrical supplies today. Background scores can move audiences to the place you want them to. When we say larger than life a high pitch sound will make it realistic to describe a scene portraying larger than life acting sequences. Sound can be used to give peculiars to certain characters making it easy to bring them closer to reality.
